The Trophy Wife

The trophy wife is young and slim
Her beauty is arresting;
Her charm and grace are loved by those
Who find her prepossessing.

Her husband's adoration
Shines from his love-lit eyes
It's clear that he worships her,
Considers her his prize.

They walk together in the light
Of proud connubial bliss,
Their arms entwined in an embrace
Impassioned by a kiss.

In the shadows of their love
The rejected first wife stands,
Blinded by the shining lights
Of the couple's wedding bands.

The symbols of their new-found love
Are symbols of her loss.
She turns away and tells herself
That she must bear this cross.

She will not allow herself
Sad thoughts that are depressing,
Because her children need her now,
And they are now her blessing.

Her husband has provided well
For the family that he left
To start a new and joyous life,
Though his children are bereft.

His former wife will do what's right
She'll teach them to be fair,
To love their father as before,
She'll hide her own despair.

She knows one day her pain will leave,
Her peace will be restored.
She'll watch her children grow up strong
Though life has cut one cord.

The final test comes in old age
When one adds up the score:
The good and bad that life has brought
And placed there at her door.

What happened to the trophy wife
And the husband who betrayed?
Had their marriage filled their dreams,
Or had the husband strayed?

Did the young wife leave her spouse
For another man?
Did her husband learn that life
Honored not his plan?

Or did the two grow old together
Despite disparate years?
Did the wife he left behind
Finally dry her tears?

Did the children grow up strong
Undaunted by the rift,
Or did they feel victimized,
Were their lives adrift?

Did the wife who was betrayed
Find someone to wed?
Or did she lead a lonely life
In her lonely bed?

******************************

There are no certain endings
When marriage vows are broken,
For wedding rings are simple things,
They're only just love's tokens.
